Lodging in & around Nakai Nam Theun National Park

Lodging inside Nakai Nam Theun National Park includes camping at designated campsites and homestay in partner villages. En route to Nakai Nam Theun, visitors can stay in guesthouses in Thalang or Nakai Town (Oudomsouk) in Nakai District. To arrange for local guides, campsites and homestays inside the park, a tour must be booked from a local guesthouse in Nakai District.

Campsites

Nam Xot (Houay Nyim) Campsite

The Nam Xot (or Houay Nyim) campsite is located on the beaches of the Nam Xot River. It is the easiest campsite to access inside Nakai Nam Theun National Park, about 30 minutes north of Nahao Village, and is ideal for beach picnics and barbecues, star gazing and family outings. It is at the trail head to Tad Nyim Waterfall and the Swamp Cypress beyond. It is equipped with two toilets and a shelter. Related Tours:

Gaeng Louang Campsite (Nam Xot River)

Gaeng Louang is located about 45 minuntes north of Nam Xot (Houay Nyim) beach campsite on the Nam Xot River. It is where visitors stay when doing the Nakai Night Safari, which starts at the Houay May Nga Substation about 1 hour north. There is a trail from Gaeng Louang to the Swamp Cypress and Tad Nyim Waterfall. The view at Gaeng Louang is one of the park’s most iconic sights. The campsite can also be an alternative campsite for the 2-day Swamp Cypress tour. It is equipped with two toilets and a shelter. Related Tours:

Nam Chae Camp (Nam Chae Area)

Nam Chae Camp is the first campsite on the Nam Chae Trail, located on the Nam Chae River and is about 14km (5+ hours) from Navang Village. Walking from the campsite along the Nam Chae provides good opportunities to see Red-shanked Doucs. Gibbons can be heard singing around the campsite in the early morning. The Ban Hang-Nam Chae Substation is located about 10km north as an alternative campsite in the Nam Chae area. It is equipped with two toilets and a shelter. Related Tours:

Ban Hang-Nam Chae Substation (Nam Chae Area)

Ban Hang-Nam Chae Substation is located on the Nam Chae Trail about 11.3km (4+ hours) along on a mountainous trail leading from Navang Village. It is the base for park rangers and can also be used as an alternative campsite to the Nam Chae Campsite, located about 10km south on Nam Chae River.  Walking from the campsite along the Nam Chae provides good opportunities to see Red-shanked Doucs. Gibbons can be heard singing near the substation in the early morning. It is equipped with one toilet, kitchen, and ranger station. Related Tours:

Homestays

Nahao Village Homestay

Nahao Village (“Ban Nahao”) is the first village that you will arrive at on tours going to the Nam Xot and Nam Chae areas. It is the location of a visitor center, where you will check in, pay park entrance fees, and get local guides and boats to go upriver. Bicycles, motorbikes and tractors can be hired to go  Navang Village (8km).  Nahao Village is an ethnically mixed village with Salang, Makong, Meuy, Phoutai, and Atel ethnic peoples. Homestays are available with local families, providing a great cultural experience for visitors and much needed income for hosts. Navang Village Homestay

Navang Village (“Ban Navang”) is located about 8km from Nahao Village and is accessible by foot (1+ hours), motorcycle or tractor (30+ minutes).  Ban Navang Village is an ethnic Makong Village that practices rice paddy and upland rice farming. It is the jumping off point for the Nam Chae and  Thong Khachaeng trails. It is 14km (5+ hours) to Nam Chae Campsite and 11.3km (4+ hours) to Ban Hang-Nam Chae Substation. Homestays are available with local families, providing a great cultural experience for visitors and much needed income for hosts. Ask your guide to book the homestay on the first or second night of your trek. Related Tours:

Guesthouses

Thalang

Thalang is the closest location to depart by boat to reach the areas currently open for visitors in Nakai Nam Theun National Park. There are two guesthouses in Thalang, both of which can organise tours (boats, local guides) into the park. 

Nakai Town (Oudomsouk Village)

Nakai Town (Oudomsouk Village) is where the Nakai Nam Theun National Park Office & Visitor Center is located and is where you will arrive if driving from Thakek or taking the bus directly. There are a few accommodations in town, and the Nakai Resort can organise tours (boats, local guides) into the park.
