Things to Do in Nakai Nam Theun National Park

There are currently three areas open for tourism in Nakai Nam Theun National Park: (1) Nam Theun Reservoir & Lan Hai for fishing and picnicking. (2) Nam Xot-Nahao area for easy beach camping and boating, including a night safari and hikes to the Swamp Cypress and Nyim Waterfall. (3) Nam Chae-Navang area for mountain trekking and primate viewing. Tours can be booked through local guesthouses in Nakai District. For details on each tour including booking details, click on the links below. Expeditions and special trips can be arranged to other areas (such as Thong Khachaeng, 6+days) with special permission.

Fishing & Picnic at Lan Hai – Nam Theun Reservoir (1/2-Day)

Take a morning or afternoon fishing trip on the Nam Theun Reservoir. Have a picnic lunch at the rocky river mouth of Lan Hai. If you’re lucky see elephants & macaques along reservoir’s edge. 

Tad Nyim Waterfall Walk & Beach Picnic on Nam Xot (Full Day)

Take 2+ hour hike to Tad Nyim Waterfall and have a picnic & swim at the Nam Xot River beach. Visit an ethnic village to learn about basket making.

Swamp Cypress Hike & Beach Camping on the Nam Xot (2-Day)

Camp on sandy beaches, hike to a waterfall and an ancient Swamp Cypress forest, and listen for gibbon calls in the morning.

Night Safari & Swamp Cypress Hike at Gaeng (2/3-Day)

Float downriver at night to look for wildlife including Sambar deer, muntjac, civets, and otters, camping at Gaeng Louang rapids. Hike to the Swamp Cypress & Nyim waterfall on day 2. Option Day 3: Camp on the sandy beaches of the Nam Xot.

Red-shanked Douc Trek & Camp at Nam Chae (2/3-Day)

Trek to Nam Jae, known for Red-shanked Douc Langurs & White-cheeked Gibbons. Camp in tents or hammocks and homestay in an ethnic village.
